XAUUSD is a symbol representing "the price of Gold in US Dollars". It combines two parts: XAU and USD.
XAU is not a normal currency code (like EUR or JPY) — it's the chemical symbol for Gold (Au, from the Latin "Aurum"), combined with the ISO prefix X used for commodities that aren't tied to any single country's currency. USD simply means US Dollar.
So XAUUSD means "how many US Dollars does 1 Troy Ounce of Gold cost". For example, if XAUUSD = 4,050.00, it means 1 Troy Ounce of Gold is worth $4,050.

A troy ounce is not the same as the everyday avoirdupois ounce used for general weight — the troy ounce is slightly heavier (1 troy oz ≈ 1.097 standard oz).
In MT4/MT5 and at most brokers you will see the symbol written as XAUUSD, and sometimes simply as GOLD.

Do not confuse trading XAUUSD with buying physical gold to save over the long term. They are completely different activities.

As a retail trader, you trade XAUUSD through a broker, whose price feed is connected to these major markets — you're not trading directly on LBMA or COMEX.

That means gold rose $15 per troy ounce in a single day. If you had bought 1.0 lot in the morning and closed in the evening, you would have made roughly $1,500 (before the broker's spread or commission).
