Retail Sales & Consumer Confidence
In the United States, consumer spending makes up roughly two-thirds of the entire economy. That means if you want to know where the US economy is heading, watch the consumer first. The two key indicators for this job are Retail Sales (what people are actually spending) and Consumer Confidence (how they feel about the future). This lesson explains how to read both, and how they move the USD, Gold, and stocks.
Retail Sales measures the total amount consumers spent at retail stores, online, restaurants, and gas stations during the previous month. It is released monthly (usually mid-month at 8:30 AM New York time = 7:30/8:30 PM Cambodia time) and is considered \"hard data\" because it measures real activity, not feelings.
Consumer Confidence measures how consumers feel about current and future economic conditions, via surveys. It is \"soft data\" (sentiment, not activity), but it matters because today's mood often becomes tomorrow's spending. There are two major reports to know:
|---|---|---|
| CB Consumer Confidence | Conference Board |
Sometimes Confidence falls (people are worried) while Retail Sales stay strong (people keep spending anyway). Which do you trust? Generally, markets and the Fed weight hard data more — what people do matters more than what they say. But soft data often turns first (it is leading), so several consecutive months of falling confidence can be an early warning before Retail Sales start to follow.
As with all data, what matters is Actual vs Forecast. This table summarizes the typical reactions:
Retail Sales |
